Baltimore Creatives Acceleration Networks (BCAN)
Maggie Villegas is a Colombian-American creator, strategist, and organizer for a just creative economy in Baltimore. She combines her passion for connecting people, her creative energy, and her love of Baltimore to build platforms that invest in futures collectively led by artists, cultural workers, and creators. She is the Executive Director of the Baltimore Creatives Acceleration Network, a collaborative movement to prepare, resource, and inspire Baltimore creatives to own their genius, build mindful creative enterprises, and shape our future. She is also a worker-owner of Tribeworks, a cooperative employment and benefits platform building pathways into the solidarity economy for independent creative workers. In 2009, she co-founded emp collective, an artist-run arts incubator that was home to boundary breaking independent artists and curators of performance, music, dance, film, visual arts and experimental in-betweens in downtown Baltimore from 2011-2018. She has worked as a creative entrepreneur in the performing arts, as a leader of large-scale public arts programs and place-based initiatives including the Baltimore Mural Program, and maintains a personal practice as an artist and curator. She is a trustee of Baltimore’s chapter of the Awesome Foundation, Live Baltimore, and the Visit Baltimore Education Foundation, serves as a mentor for Empowered Women International, serves on the investment committee for Ignite Capital, was named a Young Cultural Innovator by the Salzburg Global Seminar, and was recently named 40 under 40 by the Baltimore Business Journal.
